    An efficient multiplierless approximation of the fast Fourier transform using sum-of-powers-of-two (SOPOT) coefficients

    This letter proposes a new multiplierless approximation of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) called the multiplierless fast Fourier transform-like (ML-FFT) transformation. It makes use of a novel factorization to parameterize the twiddle factors in the conventional radix-2 n or split-radix FFT algorithms as certain rotation-like matrices and approximates the associated parameters using the sum-of-powers-of-two (SOPOT) or canonical signed digits (CSD) representations. The ML-FFT converges to the DFT when the number of SOPOT terms used increases and has an arithmetic complexity of O(N log 2 N) additions, where N = 2 m is the transform length. Design results show that the ML-FFT offers flexible tradeoff between arithmetic complexity and numerical accuracy in approximating the DFT.published_or_final_versio

    Multiplier-less discrete sinusoidal and lapped transforms using sum-of-powers-of-two (SOPOT) coefficients

    This paper proposes a new family of multiplier-less discrete cosine and sine transforms called the SOPOT DCTs and DSTs. The fast algorithm of Wang [10] is used to parameterize all the DCTs and DSTs in terms of certain (2×2) matrices, which are then converted to SOPOT representation using a method previously proposed by the authors [7]. The forward and inverse transforms can be implemented with the same set of SOPOT coefficients. A random search algorithm is also proposed to search for these SOPOT coefficients. Experimental results show that the (2×2) basic matrix can be implemented, on the average, in 6 to 12 additions. The proposed algorithms therefore require only O(N log2N) additions, which is very attractive for VLSI implementation. Using these SOPOT DCTs/DSTs, a family of SOPOT Lapped Transforms (LT) is also developed. They have similar coding gains but much lower complexity than their real-valued counterparts.published_or_final_versio

    The 47th Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems Conference Proceedings, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, 25-28 July 2004This paper proposes a new factorization for the M-channel perfect reconstruction (PR) IIR Cosine-Modulated filter banks (CMFB) proposed previously by the authors. This factorization, which is based on the lifting scheme, is also complete for the PR FIR CMFB as well as the general two-channel PR IIR filter banks if the determinant of the polyphase matrix is equal to constant multiplies of signal delays. It can be used to convert a numerically optimized nearly PR CMFB to a structurally PR system. Furthermore, the arithmetic complexity of the FB using this structure can be reduced asymptotically by a factor of two. When the forward and inverse transforms are implemented with the same set of SOPOT coefficients, a multiplier-less CMFB can be obtained. Its arithmetic complexity is further reduced and it becomes very attractive for VLSI implementation.published_or_final_versio

    Effectiveness and persistence of acitretin, ciclosporin, fumaric acid esters and methotrexate for patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis: a cohort study from BADBIR

    Background Real-world data evaluating effectiveness and persistence of systemic therapies for patients with psoriasis are limited. Objectives To determine the effectiveness and persistence of acitretin, ciclosporin, fumaric acid esters (FAEs) and methotrexate in patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Methods Data from The British Association of Dermatologists Biologics and Immunomodulators Register (BADBIR), a prospective, multi-centre pharmacovigilance register of patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis receiving biologic and/or conventional systemic therapies, were analysed. Eligible patients were ≥16 years of age receiving a first course of acitretin, ciclosporin, FAEs or methotrexate between 2007 and 2021 with ≥6 months’ follow-up. Effectiveness was defined as achieving absolute Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (aPASI) ≤ 2 reported ≥4 weeks after treatment start date until stop date. To identify baseline clinical variables associated with treatment effectiveness, we used multivariable logistic regression models estimating the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of achieving aPASI ≤2. To describe drug persistence associated with ineffectiveness, occurrence of adverse events or other reasons of discontinuation, survival estimates with 95% confidence interval (CI) were obtained using a flexible parametric model. Results were obtained using multiple imputed data. Results In total, 5430 patients were included in the analysis: 1023 (19%) on acitretin, 1401 (26%) ciclosporin, 347 (6%) FAEs and 2659 (49%) methotrexate at registration. The proportion of patients who achieved aPASI ≤ 2 was lower with acitretin 118 (21%) compared with those on ciclosporin 233 (34%), FAEs 43 (30%) and methotrexate 372 (32%). Factors associated with ineffectiveness included prior experience to previous non-biologic systemic therapies (acitretin) [(aOR, (95% CI) 0.64 (0.42, 0.96)], male sex (methotrexate) 0.58 (0.46, 0.74), co-morbidities 0.70 (0.51, 0.97) and alcohol consumption (≤14 units per week) (ciclosporin) 0.70 (0.50, 0.98). Persistence associated with all reasons of discontinuation showed better survival for methotrexate compared with acitretin, ciclosporin and FAEs cohorts at 12 months [(Survival estimate (95% CI), 46.1 (44.0, 48.3), 31.9 (29.4, 34.7), 30.0 (27.5, 32.4) and 35.0 (29.9, 40.9)], respectively. Conclusions The real-world effectiveness and persistence of acitretin, ciclosporin, FAEs and methotrexate were generally low. Previous non-biologic systemic therapies, male sex, comorbidities and alcohol consumption were risk factors associated with treatment ineffectiveness

    Do we need to distance ourselves from the distance concept? Why home and host country context might matter more than (cultural) distance

    We scrutinize the explanatory power of one of the key concepts in International Business: the concept of (cultural) distance. Here we focus on its effect on entry mode choice, one of the most researched fields in international business strategy. Our findings might, however, be equally be relevant for the field of International Business as a whole. Our analysis is based on a review of 92 prior studies on entry mode choice, as well as an empirical investigation in over 800 subsidiaries of MNCs, covering nine host and fifteen home countries across the world. We conclude that the explanatory power of distance is highly limited once home and host country context are accounted for, and that any significant effects of cultural distance on entry mode choice might simply be caused by inadequate sampling. Entry mode studies in particular, and International Business research in general, would do well to reconsider its fascination with distance measures, and instead, focus first and foremost on differences in home and host country context. We argue that serious engagement with deep contextualization is necessary in International Business research to pose new and relevant questions and develop new and innovative theories that explain empirical phenomena

    High resolution 3-Dimensional imaging of the human cardiac conduction system from microanatomy to mathematical modeling

    Cardiac arrhythmias and conduction disturbances are accompanied by structural remodelling of the specialised cardiomyocytes known collectively as the cardiac conduction system. Here, using contrast enhanced micro-computed tomography, we present, in attitudinally appropriate fashion, the first 3-dimensional representations of the cardiac conduction system within the intact human heart. We show that cardiomyocyte orientation can be extracted from these datasets at spatial resolutions approaching the single cell. These data show that commonly accepted anatomical representations are oversimplified. We have incorporated the high-resolution anatomical data into mathematical simulations of cardiac electrical depolarisation. The data presented should have multidisciplinary impact. Since the rate of depolarisation is dictated by cardiac microstructure, and the precise orientation of the cardiomyocytes, our data should improve the fidelity of mathematical models. By showing the precise 3-dimensional relationships between the cardiac conduction system and surrounding structures, we provide new insights relevant to valvar replacement surgery and ablation therapies. We also offer a practical method for investigation of remodelling in disease, and thus, virtual pathology and archiving. Such data presented as 3D images or 3D printed models, will inform discussions between medical teams and their patients, and aid the education of medical and surgical trainees

    Regular consumption of vitamin D-fortified yogurt drink (Doogh) improved endothelial biomarkers in subjects with type 2 diabetes: a randomized double-blind clinical trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Endothelial dysfunction has been proposed as the underlying cause of diabetic angiopathy that eventually leads to cardiovascular disease, the major cause of death in diabetes. We recently demonstrated the ameliorating effect of regular vitamin D intake on the glycemic status of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). In this study, the effects of improvement of vitamin D status on glycemic status, lipid profile and endothelial biomarkers in T2D subjects were investigated.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Subjects with T2D were randomly allocated to one of the two groups to receive either plain yogurt drink (PYD; containing 170 mg calcium and no vitamin D/250 mL, n<sub>1 </sub>= 50) or vitamin D3-fortified yogurt drink (FYD; containing 170 mg calcium and 500 IU/250 mL, n<sub>2 </sub>= 50) twice a day for 12 weeks. Anthropometric measures, glycemic status, lipid profile, body fat mass (FM) and endothelial biomarkers including serum endothelin-1, E-selectin and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 were evaluated at the beginning and after the 12-week intervention period.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The intervention resulted in a significant improvement in fasting glucose, the Quantitative Insulin Check Index (QUICKI), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), triacylglycerols, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), endothelin-1, E-selectin and MMP-9 in FYD compared to PYD (<it>P </it>< 0.05, for all). Interestingly, difference in changes of endothelin-1, E-selectin and MMP-9 concentrations in FYD compared to PYD (-0.35 ± 0.63 versus -0.03 ± 0.55, <it>P </it>= 0.028; -3.8 ± 7.3 versus 0.95 ± 8.3, <it>P </it>= 0.003 and -2.3 ± 3.7 versus 0.44 ± 7.1 ng/mL, respectively, <it>P </it>< 0.05 for all), even after controlling for changes of QUICKI, FM and waist circumference, remained significant for endothelin-1 and MMP-9 (<it>P </it>= 0.009 and <it>P </it>= 0.005, respectively) but disappeared for E-selectin (<it>P </it>= 0.092). On the contrary, after controlling for serum 25(OH)D, the differences disappeared for endothelin-1(<it>P </it>= 0.066) and MMP-9 (<it>P </it>= 0.277) but still remained significant for E-selectin (<it>P </it>= 0.011).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Ameliorated vitamin D status was accompanied by improved glycemic status, lipid profile and endothelial biomarkers in T2D subjects.     Developing international business relationships in a Russian context

    The collapse of the former Soviet Union has opened up a wealth of business opportunities for companies seeking new markets in the Russian Federation. Despite this, firms intending to do business in Russia have found themselves hampered by cultural differences in business practices and expectations. As Russia integrates into the global economy, understanding such practices and the managerial mindset of business people is crucial for managers who hope to navigate Russia's complex markets. This study draws on the trust literature and adopts quantitative tools to deconstruct the Russian 'Sviazi' system of social capital business networking. We develop a model isolating three dimensions of Sviazi: one an affective or emotional component; the second, a conative component; and the third, a cognitive component. The model provides a useful guide for helping foreign firms to succeed in Russia, while also serving as a basis for further research in the field. Keywords

    What drives the outward foreign direct investments (OFDIs) by emerging market firms (EMFs)? Drawing on a strategy tripod framework, this article proposes a theoretical model to predict OFDI by EMFs from China. Specifically, we use institution- and industry-based views to examine two facets of home country environment, namely the supportiveness from home government and unfavorableness from home industry, as important determinants of OFDI, and compare the relative strength of these effects. Further, we use resource-based view to argue that the effect of the home country environment is contingent on the international experience portfolios of EMFs

    Sex- and age-dependent association of SLC11A1 polymorphisms with tuberculosis in Chinese: a case control study

    BACKGROUND: Host genetic factors are important determinants in tuberculosis (TB). The SLC11A1 (or NRAMP1) gene has been studied extensively for genetic association with TB, but with inconsistent findings. In addition, no study has yet looked into the effect of sex and age on the relationship between SLC11A1 polymorphisms and TB. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted. In total, 278 pulmonary TB patients and 282 sex- and age-matched controls without TB were recruited. All subjects were ethnic Chinese. On the basis of linkage disequilibrium pattern, three genetic markers from SLC11A1 and one from the nearby IL8RB locus were selected and examined for association with TB susceptibility. These markers were genotyped using single strand conformation polymorphism analysis or fragment analysis of amplified products. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences in allele (P = 0.0165, OR = 1.51) and genotype (P = 0.0163, OR = 1.59) frequencies of the linked markers SLC6a/b (classically called D543N and 3'UTR) of the SLC11A1 locus were found between patients and controls. With stratification by sex, positive associations were identified in the female group for both allele (P = 0.0049, OR = 2.54) and genotype (P = 0.0075, OR = 2.74) frequencies. With stratification by age, positive associations were demonstrated in the young age group (age ≤65 years) for both allele (P = 0.0047, OR = 2.52) and genotype (P = 0.0031, OR = 2.92) frequencies. All positive findings remained significant even after correction for multiple comparisons. No significant differences were noted in either the male group or the older age group. No significant differences were found for the other markers (one SLC11A1 marker and one IL8RB marker) either. CONCLUSION: This study confirmed the association between SLC11A1 and TB susceptibility and demonstrated for the first time that the association was restricted to females and the young age group
